PRE- AND POST-OPERATIVE CARE

  • Have a health examination before surgery to assess whether your body is ready for the procedure.
  • If you have an immune-system-related condition, you must inform your doctor, such as kidney disease, HIV, or diabetes. Patients with these conditions may experience problems such as slow wound healing or an increased risk of infection, so the doctor must take extra precautions.
  • You should stop taking medications that slow blood clotting, such as aspirin, for7 days. You should also stop taking vitamins and dietary supplements such as vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, turmeric, ginger, garlic, dong quai, cordyceps, and grape seed.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages. Patients undergoing surgery should not drink alcohol before surgery and should avoid drinking alcohol for7 days after surgery.
  • Do not smoke for at least1 month before and after surgery.
  • Inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, medications you are currently taking, or medications you are allergic to. Anyone pregnant should not undergo surgery.
  • In cases where general anesthesia is used, the patient must avoid food and water for8 hours. If possible, someone should accompany you because the effects of the anesthesia may remain after the procedure and could affect your balance.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that can be removed easily. Do not apply lotion to the area being operated on. In the case of facial surgery, you should not wear makeup.
  • Do not wear contact lenses. Glasses should be used instead.
  • Do not bring jewelry or valuables to the hospital, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, or other valuable items.
  • Apply a cold compress during the first48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising. Cold compresses can be continued for up to1 week.
  • Swelling will usually be at its greatest during the first3 days. Apply cold compresses frequently to help reduce the swelling.
  • Keep the wound dry and clean. Avoid touching or scratching the wound and avoid getting it wet.
  • If the doctor has applied surgical tape or a bandage, keep it in place according to the doctor’s instructions.
  • Take anti-swelling medication, pain medication, and antibiotics strictly according to the doctor’s instructions.
  • It is recommended to sleep with your head elevated at approximately45 degrees during the first week.
  • Avoid heat, such as saunas, very hot showers, or prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking, as these may cause wounds to heal more slowly.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise because it may increase swelling.
